Marching Through Farmville

The last 72 hours of the American Civil War were fought through Prince Edward County, starting in Sailor's Creek followed by two skirmishes at High Bridge. Then, chasing a munitions train and each other, both armies came through the Town of Farmville and over the border into Appomattox where General Robert E. Lee ultimately surrendered.

Civil Rights in Education Heritage Trail

Over 85 years later, the Civil Rights Movement started in Prince Edward County, before Birmingham - before Selma, when a 16-year old African-American girl led a school strike against the County Board of Supervisors over the deplorable conditions under which she and her schoolmates were expected to learn. The lawsuit that ultimately resulted was named Davis v. Prince Edward and became part of the landmark Brown V Board of Supervisors leading to full integration for all students throughout the country. The Civil Rights in Education Heritage Trail® has many sites throughout the County detailing the struggles fought and won, for Civil Rights in Education.

Legacy Project Nov 2010The partnership amongst the County of Prince Edward, the Town of Farmville, the Farmville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Farmville Downtown Partnership was developed to promote all there is to do and see in the Farmville and Prince Edward County region. By leveraging our marketing dollars, and working as a team, these entities have created The Heart of Your Adventure - a program to market the region as a Destination visitors can't afford to miss - especially as we move towards those last days of the Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War. We hope your visit here will be fun, informative, and a place you will want to return to again and again. Let us be The Heart of YOUR Adventure!

High Bridge Trail State ParkThere is much to do and see when you visit Prince Edward County; however, more is coming. The last days of the American Civil War came through here 149 years ago. As we prepare for those last historic commemorations, plan to be here to take part in history. Through our Civil War sites, like Sailor's Creek Battlefield Historical State Park, and the local Historical Society, we will be ready to meet the Civil War Traveller and his family! Additionally, High Bridge Trail State Park has taken its part as a major attraction for our area for bicyclists, walkers and runners as well as Civil War buffs seeking to see where the last skirmishes took place. The Outdoor Adventure Park is the largest zip line park in Virginia. Finally, our Farmville Downtown is one of the best small towns in America - but we might be a little biased!

We proudly represent ourselves well to all who come for the sights, for the shopping, for the life that is offered here in Prince Edward County.
