Welcome to Prince Edward County, where the Civil War meets the Civil Rights Movement.

Marching Through Farmville

The last 72 hours of the American Civil War were fought through Prince Edward County, starting in Sailor's Creek followed by two skirmishes at High Bridge. Then, chasing a munitions train and each other, both armies came through the Town of Farmville and over the border into Appomattox where General Robert E. Lee surrendered.

Civil Rights in Education Heritage Trail

Over 85 years later, the Civil Rights Movement started in Prince Edward County, when a 14-year old African-American girl led a school strike against the County Board of Supervisors over the deplorable conditions under which she and her schoolmates tried to learn. The lawsuit that ultimately resulted was named Davis v. Prince Edward and became part of the landmark Brown V Board of Supervisors leading to full integration for all students everywhere. The Civil Rights in Education Heritage Trail has many sites throughout the County detailing the struggles fought and won, for Civil Rights in Education.

Families and individuals who have unpublished documents, images, diaries and so on, from the time period of the American Civil War will be encouraged to bring them to a central place where the Library of Virginia will make digital copies of these artifacts for researchers to use. Click here for more information on this and other scheduled events for the Sesquicentennial.

There is much to do and see when you visit; however, more is coming.
