Home Canning Season Opens at Prince Edward Cannery, Monday, June 1

Farmville, Va. – May 28, 2026 — The Prince Edward Cannery will officially open for the 2026 home canning season on Monday, June 1, providing county residents with access to commercial-grade equipment and workspace for preserving fresh produce and other locally grown foods.

Operated by Prince Edward County, the cannery supports local food preservation efforts and encourages self-sufficiency, sustainable living, and the continuation of traditional home canning practices. The facility allows residents to preserve fruits, vegetables, meats, and other foods from the summer and fall harvest seasons for future use.

“We are excited to welcome first-time users and welcome back our experienced canners,” said Rodney Scott, Prince Edward Cannery Manager. “We encourage residents to take advantage of the cannery.  It’s a great opportunity to learn, and enjoy the tradition of home food preservation.”

The County’s canning program has deep roots in the community, dating back to the 1940s as part of a World War II-era Victory Garden initiative designed to support home food production. The success of the program eventually led to the construction of the current stand-alone cannery facility in 1975, where it continues to serve generations of local families.

The 2026 cannery schedule is as follows:

• Home Canning is available by appointment only on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.
• Commercial Canning is also available by appointment only on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Note:  Commercial canning appointments are for producers and agricultural operations preparing food for resale.  Commercial users must comply with all applicable health, labeling, and food processing requirements.
