At the conclusion of the ceremony, the Prince Edward County Board of Supervisors will adopt a Proclamation announcing Prince Edward County as a Purple Heart County committed to honoring the service and sacrifice of our nation’s combat-wounded veterans and dedicating this County to the everlasting remembrance of her heroes.

The Purple Heart is the nation’s oldest military medal, awarded to United States Armed Forces Service members who are wounded or killed in combat.   It was created by General George Washington in 1782 as a Badge of Military Merit to recognize heroic acts by his troops.
