...

Farmville, Va. – July 20, 2026  – At its July 14, 2026 meeting, the Prince Edward County Board of Supervisors issued a “drought watch advisory” for the County of Prince Edward, Virginia.

In accordance with the County’s Drought Response and Contingency Plan, the following drought indicators warranted the Board’s action:

  • Precipitation:The majority of Prince Edward County has received between 65-75% of normal rainfall for the “water year to date” which began October 1, 2025.
  • Stream Flow:The flow in the Appomattox River has fallen below normal and remained at between the 10th and 25th percentile for a number of days, based on the USGS GAUGE # 02039500 – Appomattox River at Farmville.
  • Ground Water Levels:The state monitoring well water level (USGS Observation Well, USGS Local # 41H 3) in Buckingham County is between the 5th and 10th percentile.
  • Reservoir:Based on measurements at the staff gauge on 07/07/2026, the water level of the Sandy River Reservoir has fallen approximately 2 inches below normal pool, which represents a nominal reduction in total usable volume.

As a result of the drought watch advisory, the Prince Edward County Board of Supervisors encourages all citizens and businesses, those on wells and those on public water systems, to minimize nonessential water use and to voluntarily conserve water.
