CUSTODIAN
GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK: FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Performs responsible work in the care and cleaning of county buildings, as assigned; does related work as required. Must be able to work independently and follow a daily schedule. Work is subject to daily inspection.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
Cleaning buildings; vacuuming carpets; dusting furniture and floors.

- Sweeps, vacuums, or dust mops assigned areas.
- Removes trash from buildings; picks up trash and debris around the outside of buildings.
- Scrubs and cleans toilets, including mirrors, wash basins, urinals, commodes, and other fixtures.
- Fills tissue, towel, and soap dispensers.
- Dusts furniture, floors, walls, window sills, and other woodwork.
- Operates a vacuum cleaner and other related cleaning equipment.
- Assist with compiling supply orders for reordering and restocking supply closets.
- Be timely, dependable, trustworthy, and customer service-oriented.
- Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
General knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to perform manual work; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates; ability to read; thoroughness, cleanliness.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some building cleaning experience.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions and oils. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia is preferred.
