Outdoor Adventure

Ready to explore? Prince Edward County boasts some of the best outdoor attractions and recreational activities in Virginia. Plus, as the only county in Virginia with three state parks, we have a wealth of natural beauty to share.
Walk the Trails
High Bridge Trail State Park, which bisects Farmville’s Main Street, offers 31 miles of trail perfect for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Only four and a half miles from downtown, you’ll find the historic High Bridge – spanning the Appomattox at 2,400 feet long and 125 feet high. Among the longest bridges in the United States, the High Bridge holds a place on the National Register of Historic Places and is also a Virginia Historic Landmark.
Twin Lakes State Park holds a place of historic significance as the only pre-Civil Rights Era state park for African Americans. Today, the twin lakes offer all visitors prime spots for boating, fishing and swimming. You’ll also enjoy ranger-led educational programming and plenty of hiking trails, as well as pavilions, campsites and cabins available by reservation.
Sailor’s Creek Battlefield State Park offers events and living history programs that teach visitors about the Appomattox Campaign and the final battles of the Civil War. In addition to trails and interpretive signs, Sailor’s Creek offers tours of the historic Overton-Hillsman house, used as a field hospital.
