GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:                                                                                                FLSA: N/A

 

Staff will perform various tasks to enhance visitor experiences to the Virginia’s Heartland Regional Visitor Center and Transportation Heritage Museum, as well as the County’s Office of Tourism and Office of Economic Development.  Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Director of Economic Development, Tourism and Grants, but satisfactory, independent/unsupervised work is expected.  The Visitor’s Center is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., 7 days a week including holidays, except for Thanksgiving Weekend, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, and Easter Sunday, or as otherwise approved.  Employees could be assigned to work any of these days/hours. Average weekly total hours are normally 10 to 15 hours, but could be more or less.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

  • Meet and greet all incoming visitors to Virginia’s Heartland Regional Visitor Center and Transportation Heritage Museum.
  • Assist visitors in finding the brochures and maps that will make their visit to Prince Edward County enjoyable.Staff is expected to stand up to greet visitors and to come from behind the counter to provide assistance with and facilitate the location and discussion of brochures and other materials.
  • Manage the sale of special literature, memorabilia, and books.Perform inventory, as required.Reconcile financial transactions at the end of each day.
  • Gain a working knowledge of the area and tourist sites.
  • Offers directions to local amenities from the Visitor Center.
  • Assist with coordination of special tourism activities.
  • May contact local hotels/motels to determine if there are vacancies, upon request.
  • Minimum computer skills require the ability to research amenities assisting visitors with availability of events and festivals in the area, as well as basic Word and Excel skills.
  • Answers the phone and informs callers as to whether the County offices are open or closed for the day, provides phone numbers to County Offices or area attractions, and provides general area information.
  • Assembles tourism fulfillment packets and other information, as needed.
  • Keep brochure racks filled, and visitor spaces neat and orderly.
  • Prepare mailings for Tourism & Economic Development Office, as needed.
  • Keep bathrooms prepared for visitors – ensures paper products and hand sanitation products are kept filled.
  • Be prepared to speak about museum displays (museum is self-guided), as well as history of the area to help visitors better appreciate their visit to Prince Edward County.
  • Performs related tasks as required, and other duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Experience working with the public in customer service-related organizations.  Staff will have knowledge of the local area and history.  Staff must have good oratory skills and be comfortable speaking to the public.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and practical work experience related to customer service-oriented positions.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This is light work requiring the exertion of 10-35 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects: work requires climbing stairs, kneeling, reaching, standing, fingering and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written and computer data, operating machines and determining accuracy and thoroughness of work; the worker is subject to inside environmental conditions.
