The purpose of the building code is to protect the health, safety and welfare of the residents of Prince Edward County, VA. Building and structures should be permitted to be constructed at the least possible cost consistent with recognized standards of health, safety, energy/water conservation also barrier-free provisions for the physically handicapped and aged.
Permits are necessary for both contractors and home owners performing construction, enlarging, repairing, converting or demolishing any building within Prince Edward County.
For exemptions from application please reference the Virginia Construction Code section 108.2
Applying for a permit
Application for a permit can be applied for in person between the hours of 8:00 am to 3:30 pm Monday through Friday or they can be emailed to building@co.prince-edward.va.us Please be sure that all taxes for the property owners and property location are current prior to applying for the permit.
You will need some or all of the following documents: Zoning approval, Health Department approval, VDoT approval, copy of a title for Singlewide, Plans (electronic) and a building application.
Inspections
Inspection requests need to be called in to the office at 434-392-8838. When requesting inspections please note we are unable to provide a time frame, your inspection should be ready the day you request it by 8:00 a.m.

- Sill plate
- Floor joist
- Framing
- Veneer
- Electrical
- Plumbing
- Mechanical
- Gas
- Fireplace
- Final
Paperwork that may be needed prior to a final inspection for a Certificate of Occupancy.
Please be sure that our office has these in hand prior to setting up the final inspection.
Certificate of Occupancy
The building official shall issue the certificate of occupancy within five (5) working days after approval of the final inspection and when the building or structure or portion thereof is determined to be in compliance with this code and any pertinent laws or ordinances, or when otherwise entitled.
Exceptions:
- A certificate of occupancy is not required for an accessory structure as defined in the IRC.
- A new certificate of occupancy is not required for an addition to an existing Group R- 5 building that already has a certificate of occupancy.
